The Board Effectiveness Survey Application (BESA) found online at Board Checkup (www.boardcheckup.com) was designed as a research intervention to fill gaps in board capacity to self-regulate the governance process, bringing them closer to what theory says is ideal governance behavior and the often less than ideal reality of governance practice. Based on a process theory of change and empirical research into the most effective board performance assessment practices, Board Checkup, a software as a service company (SaaS) provides performance management services to boards of directors to help them reach high levels of leadership and governance effectiveness. To date, over 700 boards in 80 countries registered online at Board Checkup to self-assess performance to significant positive increases in effectiveness over time. In addition, they find significant increases in board of director impact on organization effectiveness, including advancement of the mission, increases in operational efficiency, accountability, and morale. With proof of concept and product-market fit, the intervention has been transformed into fee for service business model with product-led growth strategies resulting in 150 new subscribers in the first year.
